Eight Vietnamese women cheated 140,000 yuan ($22,810) from villagers in Shaoyang, Hunan province, with fake marriages in the case of fraudulent marriage involving foreigners, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Tuesday.
A Vietnamese woman named Zhang Shilan arranged for the eight to marry villagers in Shaoyang's Xinshao county and received the money from the villagers in January 2013. The eight women absconded from the villagers' homes together and went back to their hometown in Vietnam.
Police caught Zhang and Ding Shihong, one of the fake brides, before they left China. Recently, Zhang was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined 20,000 yuan. Ding was sentenced to one year in jail and fined 10,000 yuan by a court in Shaoyang.
