TAIPEI - Hundreds of Taiwan people gathered outside the Philippine representative office in Taipei on Monday to protest at the killing of a Taiwan fisherman by Philippine coast guards last week.

Throwing eggs at the office's nameplate, burning Filipino flags and waving banners, the demonstrators demanded that the Philippine government apologize for Thursday's incident.

At 164 nautical miles southeast of the southernmost tip of Taiwan, fisherman Hung Shih-Cheng, 65, was shot dead.

Demonstrators demanded the Philippine government compensate for Hung's death and the damage to the fishing boat, and punish those responsible.

The Philippine coast guard on Friday admitted killing the Taiwan fisherman but said personnel opened fire on the fishing boat in self-defense.

Taiwan's leader Ma Ying-jeou has given the Philippines 72 hours, until Tuesday, to apologize and compensate for the incident.

Tsai Pao-hsing, manager of Liuchie Fishermen's Association and one of the protest organizers, said demonstrators will make their next move if the Philippines does not give a "satisfactory response" by midnight Tuesday.
