Emergency plan launched for typhoon-hit Jiangxi

        ( Xinhua)

BEIJING - China's central authorities initiated a level-four emergency plan at 4 pm Saturday in response to torrential rains and flooding caused by typhoon Haikui in east China's Jiangxi province.

The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs have dispatched teams to help with the relief work.

Over one million people were affected by the disasters, while some 145,000 had been evacuated, provincial civil affairs authorities have reported.

Following East China's Zhejiang, Shanghai and Anhui, Jiangxi was the fourth provincial region covered by such level-four emergency plans in response to the latest typhoon since Wednesday.

Haikui, which means "sea anemone" in Chinese, is the third typhoon to wallop China's eastern coast in two weeks, which has brought gales and heavy downpours to the region.
