The illegal destruction of cultural relics, damaging them or removing them must be punished in accordance with laws concerned, said Li Xiaojie, deputy minister of Culture and director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, people.com.cn reported.
The heritage official said that the so-called "maintenance-oriented removal" and "protection-oriented removal" that has occurred in some cities has no legal basis and is contrary to the basic principles of protecting cultural relics.
