Taxkorgan Tajik autonomous county, located on the east Pamir Plateau, is one of the poorest counties with a population of 36,900 living on an area of 25,000 square kilometers. In order to provide better education to the children, the government has built primary schools in townships and middle schools in county towns for children since 2004.

However, owing to far away the schools are and the traffic inconvenience, many students can not register on time, a deputy county chief said.

In the largest primary school of southern Xinjiang in Taxkorgan county, although the new term began a month ago, many students have not come back yet.

He said that over 90 percent of the people live on grazing and land generally live across a scattered area. It's said that the farthest town is 180 kilometers from the county center and the farthest village is over 1,000 kilometers away. The children have to climb mountains and trek long distances to schools.
