BEIJING - Floods and landslides triggered by recent heavy rains in six of China's provincial-level regions have left 100 people dead and 17 others missing this month.

Over 1.8 million people in the provincial-level regions of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Henan, Chongqing, Hubei and Shanxi had to be relocated because of the disasters, the National Disaster Reduction Commission said in a statement released on Friday.

The disasters have also caused an estimated 27.21 billion yuan ($4.25 billion) in direct economic losses, the statement said.

About 70 percent of the affected counties are in remote and less developed areas, making it more difficult for rescuers to carry out relief work, the statement said.

Weather information from the country's meteorological authorities indicate that heavy rains in west China have ceased for the time being, according to the statement.
