China's State Council has passed its first sports industry policy to urge the development of the sports industry and activities, the Shanghai Securities News reported today.

China's annual output value of sports industry makes up less than one percent of GDP, one tenth of that of western countries, leaving great potential in the future, the report said.

"I am upbeat about the domestic sports industry," said Zhang Tao,?vice president?of a brand sports wear?company, "The sales of sports clothing totaled 9 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) last year. Research shows the growth rate of sports industry is expected to be no less than 15 percent next year," he added.
