4 killed as train derails in south China

Updated: 2009-07-29 10:39 NANNING: At least four passengers died and more than 50 others were injured after a train derailed in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region early Wednesday due to a landslide, railway authorities said.
Train 1473, from Xiangfan of central Hubei Province to Zhanjiang of Guangdong Province, derailed at 4:22 a.m. in Liuzhou City of Guangxi. The locomotive and following four cars detrailed.
Chen Ming, a Nanning Railway Bureau official, said the injured were receiving treatment in hospitals. All the other passengers have been transported to the Liucheng railway station in Liucheng County. The railway route linking Jiaozuo, central Henan Province to Liuzhou, was cut off. Guangxi regional government chairman Ma Biao and vice chairman Yang Daoxi have rushed to the scene to direct rescue operation early Wednesday morning. Heavy rain has hit the northern and central parts of Guangxi from Monday to early Wednesday. On June 29, two passenger trains collided in central Hunan Province due to a brake failure, leaving three people dead and 63 injured. |
