World opposes 'referendum' ambassador says
By Wang Zhuoqiong (China Daily) Updated: 2008-03-05 07:29 Taiwan authorities' secessionist attempts will not be tolerated and have been opposed by the international community, Zhou Wenzhong, the Chinese ambassador to the United States, said on Monday. "The crux of the situation in the Taiwan Straits is that Chen Shui-bian is obstinately pushing forward the 'referendum' (on United Nations membership)," Zhou told China Daily during the first session of the CPPCC. The planned "referendum " has been opposed by not only the Chinese people but the international community including the US, Zhou said. Good dialogue mechanisms have contributed to the recent development of China-US bilateral ties, Zhou said. As constructive partners, China and the US have seen mutual benefits increased and coordination and cooperation strengthened, he said. The mechanisms have led to frequent visits by both sides at many levels and in several sectors, including the upcoming attendance of State leaders at the G8 summit and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation this year. Zhou said more and more Americans are seeing China as an "opportunity". But there are still some who go against this mainstream point of view, he said. "Some look at China from a confrontational angle. I hope they will change their views." (China Daily 03/05/2008 page6) |
