Indonesia to discuss food standards with China

JAKARTA - Indonesia is expected to send a team representing a number of institutions to China early next month to discuss safety standards for food and other products, an Indonesian diplomat has said.

"The team will visit China to settle bilateral trade issues between the two countries, after both countries slapped bans on each other's products," deputy chief of mission in Beijing, Mohamad Oemar, was quoted Monday by English daily The Jakarta Post as saying.

He said it is hoped the visit will help provide accurate information on the quality standards imposed by the two countries.

"We hope the outcome of the visit will settle the dispute over food and other product safety standards so that there will be no rejections of products on the grounds that they fail to satisfy these standards," Oemar said.

He said the two countries had established a joint commission to identify problems and constraints in an effort to enhance bilateral relations.

The joint commission on economic, trade and technical cooperation last met in October 2006, in Bali. Its 9th meeting is expected to be held in China this year.
