Hu Jintao was reelected general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee at the committee's first plenary session in Beijing yesterday.
Hu is a native of Jixi, Anhui Province. He was born in December 1942. He joined the CPC in April 1964 and began working in July 1965. He graduated from the Department of Water Conservancy Engineering at Tsinghua University with a major in hub hydropower stations.
Hu now serves as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, president of the People's Republic of China, chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission and chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China.
The following is a biographical sketch:
1959-64: Student at the Department of Water Conservancy Engineering at Tsinghua University;
1964-65: Postgraduate and political instructor at the Water Conservancy Engineering Department at Tsinghua University;
1965-68: Carried out research and development at the Water Conservancy Engineering Department at Tsinghua University. He also served as a political instructor before the start of the "cultural revolution" (1966-76) in 1966;
1968-69: Worked with the house-building team of the Liujia Gorge Engineering Bureau, under the Ministry of Water Conservancy;
1969-74: Technician and secretary of No 813 Sub-Bureau, Fourth Engineering Bureau, under the Ministry of Water Conservancy. He was also deputy secretary of the general Party branch of the sub-bureau's head office;
1974-75: Secretary of the Gansu Provincial Construction Committee (GPCC);
1975-80: Deputy director of the design management division of the GPCC;
1980-82: Vice-chairman of the GPCC and secretary of the Gansu Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League (September-December 1982);
1982-84: Member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and chairman of the All-China Youth Federation;
1984-85: First secretary, Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China;
1985-88: Secretary of the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee and first secretary of the Party Committee of Guizhou Provincial Military Command;
1988-92: Secretary of the Party Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region and first secretary of the Party Committee of Tibet Military Command;
1992-93: Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee;
1993-98: Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee;

Made an additional vice-chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission at the fourth plenary session of the Fifteenth CPC Central Committee. Elected vice-president of the People's Republic of China at the first session of the Ninth National People's Congress. Appointed vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China at the twelfth session of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress.
Elected president of the People's Republic of China at the first session of the Tenth National People's Congress. Became chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission at the fourth plenary session of the Sixteenth CPC Central Committee. Elected chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China at the third session of the Tenth National People's Congress.
