        BEIJING - China has spent more than 1 trillion yuan ($151.5 billion) on building up its civil aviation infrastructure and in purchasing aircraft over the past five years, official data showed on Tuesday.

        Between 2005 and 2010, 33 airports were built, and more than 70 were expanded and renovated. Another 11 new airports are currently under construction, according to figures released by the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC).

        A total of 175 airports in operation last year covered 76 percent of the population.

        By the end of last year, China's civil aviation had 1,604 transportation aircraft, an increase of 741 planes from 2005. The general aviation fleet, meanwhile, has doubled to 1,000.
