The history of the University of Portsmouth dates back to 1870. Since the award of the first degree in 1900, the University has maintain its commitment to promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching and research across its five faculties- Portsmouth Business School, Faculty of Creative and Culture Industries, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Technology.
There are approximately 20,000 students studying a wide range of courses at the University, in the heart of Portsmouth's city centre. Over 3,500 students come from approximately 100 countries, so you will be among friends from the start.
We have fantastic and resources to support you in your studies. This includes our impressive, newly extended library and the Maths Café to help you achieve the best grades, and up-to-date IT resources, including our extensive wireless network and dedicated centre for all your IT needs.
We also have wide range of purpose-built, modern and well-equipped halls of residence all offering the opportunity to meet and live amongst other students from different course, ages, cultures and backgrounds. There are ten halls, in three locations, giving nearly 3,000 hall rooms.

South East Asia Regional office
The University of Portsmouth's long association with South East Asia spans more than 30 years and we are particularly proud of the fact that some of our present students are the sons and daughters of those from the region who studied with us in the date 1970s.To consolidate this relationship, the University opened its South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) in 2001 to provide a local point of contact ,advice and support for prospective, present and past students, as well as our education and business partners.
Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, SEARO is the focal point for all the University's activities in the region. In addition to processing student applications and issuing letters of offer, the office staff organizes the University's annual graduation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, assist visiting academic staff to meet with colleagues at local universities and colleges, and attend education exhibitions organized by the British Council and other organizations.
Visitors are welcome at SEARO and prospective students wishing to find out what study opportunities await them at Portsmouth will be given expert advice about courses that match their career aspirations. For students with confirmed offers ,we assist with UK residence permit/visa applications, accommodation booking, travel arrangements and pre-departure briefings.

China Office
In October 2006, the University of Portsmouth opened its China Representative Office in Shanghai. The office provides a local point of contact for Chinese partners and agents, gives support and advice for students applying to study at the University and works to develop the University's alumni activity in China.
The team in Shanghai is headed by Dr Yang Ming-he, who has 18 years experience with the University of Portsmouth-first as a research fellow in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Science and later leading the international Office student advice team.
